Discover Rosine's Restaurant

Walk down Alvarado Street in downtown Monterey and you’ll almost always see a line curling out the door of Rosine's Restaurant, 434 Alvarado St, Monterey, CA 93940, United States. That alone tells you something. In a town packed with seafood spots, cafes, and tourist-friendly diners, this family-run place has carved out its own loyal following.

The first time I stopped in was after a long morning walking along Cannery Row. I wanted comfort food, not another quick bite. Inside, the vibe felt instantly welcoming-high ceilings, warm lighting, and the kind of buzz that comes from real conversation, not just background music. Servers moved with confidence, greeting regulars by name while guiding newcomers through the menu. You could tell this wasn’t just another restaurant; it was part of the fabric of Monterey.

Let’s talk about the menu, because that’s where things get interesting. The selection blends American comfort food with Mediterranean influence. You’ll find hearty breakfast plates, sandwiches stacked high, homemade soups, pastas, seafood, and daily specials. According to the National Restaurant Association, comfort food remains one of the top-performing categories in U.S. dining trends, especially in tourist destinations where guests look for familiarity and warmth. Rosine’s leans into that trend but elevates it through quality ingredients and careful preparation.

On my visit, I ordered their famous chicken shawarma plate. The meat was tender, seasoned with a balanced mix of garlic, citrus, and spices, and paired with fluffy rice and fresh salad. What impressed me most was the execution. Cooking shawarma properly requires controlled marination time and consistent heat to prevent dryness-something often overlooked in casual dining. Here, the texture was spot-on. A friend went for the homemade lasagna, layered generously with ricotta and a rich meat sauce that tasted like it had simmered for hours. That depth of flavor isn’t accidental; slow cooking allows proteins and aromatics to break down gradually, creating a fuller taste profile.

And then there’s the bakery case. If you’ve read local reviews, you’ve probably seen people rave about the cakes. They’re not exaggerating. The display near the entrance is stacked with towering slices of chocolate cake, carrot cake, and cheesecakes that look like they belong in a pastry shop, not a diner. I tried the chocolate blackout cake, and it was moist without being overly sweet-a balance that pastry professionals often stress as critical to repeat business. The Culinary Institute of America frequently highlights texture and sweetness control as key factors in dessert satisfaction, and Rosine’s clearly understands that.

What stands out beyond the food is consistency. I’ve returned multiple times-breakfast once, dinner twice-and the quality hasn’t wavered. During breakfast, their fluffy pancakes and perfectly cooked eggs showed attention to detail. Eggs, for example, require precise timing and temperature control; even a slight overcook can ruin the experience. Here, they arrived exactly as requested.

Authoritativeness matters when judging a restaurant. Monterey’s dining scene is competitive, with strong seafood institutions and established bistros nearby. Yet Rosine’s continues to earn positive reviews across travel platforms and local guides. That kind of sustained reputation doesn’t happen by accident. It reflects operational discipline, ingredient sourcing, and kitchen management systems that work smoothly even during rush hours.

To be fair, wait times can stretch during peak tourist seasons, particularly weekends. If you’re in a hurry, plan accordingly. However, the staff handles crowds with transparency and professionalism, giving realistic estimates and keeping things moving.

Overall, this spot captures what many travelers are secretly hoping for: homemade comfort food, generous portions, friendly service, and desserts that are genuinely memorable. Whether you’re a local dropping in for brunch or a visitor exploring Monterey’s historic downtown, Rosine’s offers a dining experience grounded in quality and care-where the food feels thoughtfully made, not mass-produced, and every plate reflects years of practice in getting it right.

  • We absolutely love the food everytime we come here. My favorite is the loaded potato appetizer. I have been here more than 3 times and have never been disappointed, this is our go to spot for lunch whenever we visit Monterey or Big Sur. Most recently we tried their cream cheese chocolate cake for my brother’s birthday and it was amazing. The waiters were so sweet and came together to sing a birthday song and it made my brother’s day.

  • Four of us stopped in at Rosine’s for dinner before a concert at the Golden State Theater across the street. We had a 6:30 PM reservation and were seated immediately upon arrival, despite the restaurant being very busy. Our server greeted us promptly and took our order without delay. We ordered the Chicken Parmesan, Fettuccine Alfredo with Prawns, Crispy Hot Chicken Sandwich, and the California Club. The food arrived quickly and everything was delicious. I had the Crispy Hot Chicken, which came with hot oil and hone; excellent flavor and perfectly prepared. The staff were friendly, attentive, and professional throughout our visit. We all enjoyed our meals and still had plenty of time to walk over to our concert. A great experience overall.

  • I came to Rosine’s for brunch with my mom and aunt, and we absolutely loved it! The food was absolutely delicious, everything tasted so fresh and flavorful, and the portions were generous. The service was excellent too friendly, attentive, and made us feel so welcome. The atmosphere was warm and inviting, perfect for a relaxing weekend brunch. We’ll definitely be coming back again soon! Highly recommend this place to anyone looking for great food and great service.

  • We've been here a few times and had a different server each time. We've only tried the cakes and pies so far, so this review is mainly about that. The staff are generally very nice. The cakes and pies are delicious and some pieces could even replace a whole meal, they are so rich. We can highly recommend the carrot cake and the (very rich) peanut butter cake. We will definitely be back to try all the different cakes and pies and are already looking forward to their new creations.

  • This is a Monterey County legend! Known for their spectacular desserts, especially their cakes! Everything we’ve ever had for breakfast or lunch has been delicious. Service is good and the coziness and decor (especially at Christmas) is inviting. We look forward to visiting again on our next trip home. Highly recommend! Don’t miss out on dining here at least once if you are visiting Monterey.

  • Decided to stop in for an early dinner with my wife and had a great dining experience. I reserved a table for dinner through the OpenTable app. After spending the afternoon visiting Carmel by the Sea, we got hungry a bit earlier than expected so I revised my reservation to an earlier time. Upon arrival to Rosine's we were greeted warmly and seated promptly. After being seated, we were welcomed by Sarah, our charming and informative server. She took our drink order and gave us time to peruse the menu. My wife decided on a cup of the minestrone soup and lasagna, and I chose a cup of the clam chowder and calamari steak sandwich. My wife is somewhat of a minestrone soup afficionado and she thoroughly enjoyed her soup saying how tasty, flavorful, and chunky it was, claiming it was the best she's ever had. My clam chowder was equally enjoyable, thick and tasty and full of clams, potatoes, and vegetables. My wife's lasagna was artfully presented, surrounded by slices of garlic bread. It was delicious and had the right balance of noodles, cheese, and sauce. My calamari steak sandwich was also delicious, evenly breaded and included a buttery toasted bun, fries, and ketchup and tartar sauce on the side. The portions of our entrees were very generous such that neither of us could finish and had to take the rest to go. Overall, we enjoyed our experience at Rosine's. Sarah was very attentive to our needs, answered all of our questions, and promptly refilled our drinks, all while being gracious and welcoming. We'll definitely return the next time we're in town.

  • Sarah was an excellent server—very attentive and knowledgeable. She took care of everything we needed, answered all our questions, and was quick without ever making us feel rushed. Great food and a wonderful atmosphere made the experience even better.
